Football and yerba: the importance of Brasil to embrace the Malvinas and start up a spiral of peace.

  • “America, animal of green milk”, have we got something to contribute to the world’s turmoil in this 21st Century?

  • Here are some keys from a place of innocent, guilt-free trust, tuning in our own urgencies with world urgencies, and weaving agreements that require us to extend deadlines, break down borders, take on commitments and accept help.

  • Let’s look into this situation: the accretion of nuclear warheads across the world diminishes the chances of survival in the planet, and the accumulation of political tensions lowers the chances of peace. Among a hundred urgencies, let’s focus on some: Bolivia needs access to the sea; Ukraine, peace; Russia needs to prevent themselves from NATO, Israel from Iran; Palestine needs independence, China to trade without obstacles; The United States needs to restore employment numbers, the Kurds need autonomy, Argentina needs to recover territory that is under colonial regime. Humanity as a whole needs peace, taking care of biodiversity, and to reduce destructive risks. Are we going to wait heavenly manna, or are we going to get to work?

La mano de Brasil

  • Brasil’s hand

  • The Malvinas, a piece of the Abya yala continent (America), gives us a marvellous opportunity if, instead of taking out a dagger –the most usual shortcut- we take out the brush; instead of screaming we exhibit our quiet simplicity, our trust. Is consensus possible? And if possible, does it come by itself, or as Matin Luther King says, you have to shape it?

  • We Argentines thank today Brazil’s commitment as a neighbouring country, brother and partner, but mainly for its commitment to truth, above all sectoral interests, a rare thing in this world bessieged by pettiness.

  • The Special Committee on decolonization of the United Nations in New York, the Brazilian U.N. ambassador, Sérgio Danese, urged Argentina and Great Britain to “find a definite solution to their sovereignty dispute by restoring full Argentine sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands, which was seized in 1833, bearing in mind the interests of the islands' inhabitants.”

  • It is just what Argentina and the world need: diplomatic clarity, steadfast convictions and serenity to untangle the knot. Many opt for violence nowadays, evidently, and that is why this exceptional condition we find in Danese’s voice must get an standing ovation, whilst there are analysts of great authority warning us of the possibility of a conflagration involving the use of nuclear warheads. A war like that would jeopardise life in this planet during the next three or four decades. Not in thirty years but during that time, meaning: it could be tomorrow.

  • Danese said, "Before the United Nations and the Argentine people, Brazil reiterates its historic support of Argentina's legitimate sovereignty rights over the Malvinas Islands."

  • The ambassador vindicated the United Nations and condemned Argentine military dictatorship, but was clear about the central issue: in this case the right to self-determination does not apply, as the current population was introduced by the invading country, while respect for the families living there does apply. The conflict is nearly bicentenial and has spanned multiple generations.

  • What are we doing with this testimony? First, we thank its authenticity. Second: we sharpen creativity so that a peaceful way out of the labyrinth starts up the most wanted engine: peace.

  • Can Argentina and Great Britain start this virtuous circle? Yes, they can, but strong, brave, creative, lucid, patient, firm and kind leaderships are needed, who do not overstep the mark or add fuel to the fire, but who honor the value of one's word. Leaderships that live up to these wonderful peoples, and the world’s situation, meaning: who can step out of their jingoism, their clousures and short-term speculations.

  • The international support in favour of Argentina is overwhelming. That is why our country, instead of basking in the warmth of feeling protected, must sharpen its creativity and make determined, unexpected moves, artistic, we should say, due to their novelty and their beauty and their glowing. Let the peoples feel that Argentina knows how to receive, but also it knows how to give.

No somos víctimas

  • We are not victims

  • We must be creative and guileless, as the road to hell is paved with threatening thugs. Blameless innocents, trusted, and assume the risks of trust. The United States believed Iran was a piece of cake, Russia believed that a month was enough to raze Ukraine to the ground; the Argentine despotism also once promised that within three months it would be in Asunción, and acted as an accomplice, along with Brazil and Great Britain, to the genocide of Paraguay. That happened three decades after Great Britain invaded the Malvinas. That's the way it is. Honesty is a central ingredient in that dreamed spiral.

  • Now: the decisions a State or government makes, are not necessarily what the peoples want. In fact, during the War against Paraguay, more that a few were branded as 'paraguayistas' (Paraguayan-sympathizers) and 'yerbócratas' (yerba mate oligarchs) for opposing the attack.

  • Argentina is not a victim, and it must stop playing the victim. Neither Brazil is a victim, and both countries, alongside Chile, bear a grater responsibility to the whole world due to the tremendous territory they have across three continents: Abya yala, Oceania and Antarctica, with immense seas. Enough, then, of feeling diminished, colonized, and whining about misfortunes. The countries of the Southern Cone of Abya yala must put on their big boy pants, and and finally learn what it means to give.

Aquí no venimos a prejuzgar.

  • Will our leaders rise to the occasion? Will Great Britain’s leaders rise to the occasion? We do not know. We are not here to prejudge. Now, is not this the perfect time to lay on the table the main attribute of the Mercosur peoples: the “rueda de mate” (shared mate circle)?

  • We point this out from an Entre Ríos that was once 'yerbócrata', the territory that, along with Uruguay, most cultivates the 'vice' of mate (ten kilos of yerba per person per year), and yet, does not cultivate the yerba itself. Strange, and a beautiful sign of interdependence. Yes, the very same interdependence we need to embark on this path of reconciliation and maturity. A maturity that begins in the childlike virtue of guilelessness.

  • We are, moreover, the great Guaraní territory that sowed the seeds of football with the ancient manga ñemborosái, and that gathers (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay) half of all the Wold Cups, why not explore if we are ready for other colective games?

  • The mate circle simbolizes friendship, wisdom, serenity, dialogue among people and with the rest of biodiversity. It preceded and encompasses diplomacy. Football is, along with music, the universal language.

  • “The day the peoples are free, politics will be a song” says Canto al sueño americano, in the deep voice of Eduardo Falú, in the deep poetry of Jaime Dávalos, the very same man who whispers: “America, animal of green milk, along the great vertebrated mountain range, sinks its austral snout beneath the Pole and rests upon its proletarian strength.”

  • How proud will feel the brothers that cultivate Shakespeare’s tongue in the Malvinas islands, when they feel hugged by this wonderful continent once and for all, cherishing it without guilt, as they receive our deep silences in the mate circle, receiving our candor, our history full of visionaries and brave people, and full as well of frauds, because we are human, big surprise. We reflect upon that beautiful hour, bowing before the ancient wisdom of these territories that speak of harmony, tekó porá, collective and festive work, community life; they speak of hospitality.

Dar arranque

  • Start up

  • Many years ago, we published an editorial embrace titled “The British and Argentinians, sisters and brothers forever“, to fuel fraternity and suggest that the integration of the Malvinas must be autonomous, or not be at all. We that suffer from Argentina's internal colonialism have no right to extrapolate our own missteps. If the original confederation does not work here, and a centralist despotism rules instead, then so be it: let us recognize the prodigal son's autonomy, with the expectation that it will soak into us in the future.

  • To earn the trust of the islanders, we on the mainland must swallow our pride, reconcile with ourselves, and engage in self-criticism; we must admit that we did to others what Spain, Portugal, and England did to us. It is time to stop pointing fingers.

  • This 21st century demands the art of peace, because it has us on edge. Any war of the past could be contained, but today's reality shows us that with a dozen states armed with nuclear warheads, the chances of peace are reduced to a minimum. Therefore, priorities change, and they must focus on this: first, staying alive; then, sorting out the details.

  • Just a few years ago, we would start a motor with a hand crank. So then: the Malvinas case can find a peaceful way out that simultaneously serves as a hand crank to launch another era in the world. Here we will look at examples, not to follow them to the letter, but to refresh creativity and fuel options that are currently locked away.

Desde la “a” hasta la “q”

  • From “a” to “q”

  • Last February, we proposed 'Collaborating from below to reverse the arms race,' taking the Malvinas as a trigger—in this case, a trigger for flowers, firmly planted in guilelessness.

  • We repeat: we stand for guilelessness. And we are not ashamed of it. In the manner of a reverse shock doctrine. We ask ourselves: can anyone make a concession, in the current global tension, to trigger cascading changes that break the fatal trend?

  • Here is the proposal (a summary that requires deeper unpacking, since each point involves immense complexity)

  • A. Argentina works out a deal with Britain and Brazil to place the South Atlantic under British governance for some time, followed by a joint British-Brazilian administration, before eventually handing it over to Mercosur and Chile, so that the handover is safe and peaceful, and any outburst of violence shall be prevented.

  • B- Chile reaches an agreement with Bolivia to grant it permanent, sovereign access to the sea

  • C- Brazil accepts a United Nations opinion on the Amazonia.

  • D- Brazil persuades Russia to soften its stance on Ukraine.

  • E- Russia and China welcome the phased military drawdown of the Anglo-American empire (NATO) in the South Atlantic, reaping the immediate benefits of regional détente. Meanwhile, China and Taiwan agree to enter talks aimed at a unified relationship that guarantees full autonomy.

  • F- In response to these gestures in the Malvinas, nuclear-armed states agree to open a dialogue on disarmament and the restructuring of the defense industry, effectively reversing the race towards global destruction

  • G- Iran commits to halting its nuclear ambitions and respecting the integrity of Israel.

  • H-Israel reaches an agreement with Palestine for its independence, sharing the capital and other territories.

  • I-In tribute to the peace achieved by those willing to yield ground, Turkey and Syria agree to confederal autonomy regimes for the Kurds.

  • J-North and South Korea launch negotiations aimed at reconciliation.

  • K. The United States benefits from no longer having to sustain a disproportionate military budget across multiple war fronts, allowing it to pivot its focus elsewhere.

  • L-CELAC solidifies the peace and nuclear non-proliferation treaties across the region.

  • M- Europe repairs ties with Russia to foster distension, while easing its relationship with Britain in recognition of its gradual withdrawal from the South Atlantic. They even secure an agreement over Gibraltar following a framework similar to that of the Malvinas. In short: promoting unity among peoples reduces to insignificance conflicts that today seem overwhelming.

  • N- Britain secures its peaceful presence in the South Atlantic for half a century (albeit under a shared administration) along with a permanent presence in Antarctica in alliance with Argentina and Chile.

  • O- Just as China secures international commitments on marine wildlife conservation and Brazil on protecting the Amazonia, the remaining nations sign pledges for a steady, seamless reduction in extractivism and pollution: GMOs, agrochemicals, and industrial mining and drilling techniques...

  • P-All states agree to a sharp reduction in public debt through mechanisms that convert speculative capital. Furthermore, nations that benefit from these peace guarantees, no longer forced to make the exorbitant defense expenditures required today, contribute a portion of their savings toward this drastic debt relief for developing countries.

  • Q- Argentina wins in peace, sovereignty, integration, and biodiversity, gaining the opportunity to unfold its economy free from the guillotine of debt, while thriving within a global arena that successfully reverses the current downward spiral.

  • We have left 90% of countries and the majority of conflicts out, because we are not drafting a list of problems. In this scarce space, we target only a few examples to unfold a model, with the idea that this model can serve various disputes and disagreements, inspired by the domino effect. Yes, strategies of distension and engagement are nothing new, but here we are starting from below, and aiming for the very top, at a critical moment when global powers now openly state they do not rule out the use of nuclear warheads, and advisors are suggesting limited wars with atomic bombs. In short: we are thinking and writing on the brink of the abyss.

  • Can a 'rueda de mate' inspire other shared circles? Can Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, and Bolivia, by focusing on the conflict over the Malvinas and the access to the sea, launch a proactive path towards peace? This extreme of guilelessness is a response to the extreme of destruction that looms ahead.

  • Here, it is game over, but a true game could just be beginning. Broadening horizons, extending timelines, giving up ground so that others may do the same, returning to trust..
